Government announces plan to install 600,000 heat pumps by 2028

On the 18th November, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed his Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution. The document outlined 10 ways in which the UK can create 250,000 new jobs whilst simultaneously eliminating its contributions to climate change by 2050. For us, the big news was point 7- installing 600,000 heat pumps in homes, schools and hospitals by 2028.

You may not be aware of the types of heat pump or how they work, so let’s take a closer look.

Air source heat pumps

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) work by taking energy from the air and heating it up by running it through a fan and a compressor. ASHPs can take ambient heat and increase its heating capacity by 500%, making them a highly cost-effective option. ASHPs work in all weather conditions and can be used to heat both air and water. Best of all, businesses or homeowners who install an ASHP can expect a 30-40% reduction in their annual heating bills.

Ground source heat pumps

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) absorb low-grade solar energy from rain and sunlight. This heat is concentrated to increase its temperature and then released to heat air or water. This is a highly efficient system, producing 4 kilowatts of energy for every kilowatt it consumes. Just like ASHPs, GSHPs work in all weathers and will reduce your annual energy bills by 30-40%

Great news for the environment

As one of the UK’s leading installers of heat pumps, we know better than anyone their advantages over traditional boilers. Woodhouse Environmental Services Director Dan Fox explains why the announcement is such good news:

“For a long time, we have been working hard to help people understand why and how ASHPs and GSHPs are the future in helping to reduce their carbon footprint. It’s great to see that the government is now taking action to push this further!”

Give us a call

At Woodhouse Environmental Services, we have years of first-hand experience with heat pumps. We are proud of the work we do and we will be on hand in the years to come to help the government reach its goal.
